For me Valentine is one of those seasons that’s kinda like a stop gap between Christmas and Easter. You know what I mean? I like to making some Valentine items but don’t want to spend TOO much. In any case, let’s be honest, our shops are not like the ones in the US where they’ve got SO much choice! Fortunately you can still make plenty of really simple (but CUTE!) signs without breaking the bank! Just like this XOXO Valentine sign. Got some left over ribbon and some cute card stock? Well, combined with some basic (and budget!) items from your craft stash you’re pretty much set!
here’s what I used for my XOXO Valentine sign
This bathroom sign from The Range
White Acrylic paint
All my love ribbon from The Range
Small heart cuts outs – I can’t find the exact ones online, but these will do the trick!
Mod Podge (of course!)
Card stock of your choice – I used the Lipstick basics block
Some left over buttons
A few more pieces of ribbon. You can find my favourite shop here.
Hot glue – this mini glue gun from The Range is one of my favourites
How to create your super-simple sign!
This one really was SO easy but, I think you’ll agree, SO effective!! I made it on a Facebook Live if you want to follow along here.
Let me start off by saying I love to use these type of frames. They are just perfect as a base for crafting as they’ve got the wooden frame surround already done for you! All you do is paint over the wording and you’ve got yourself a blank sign, all ready for you to get creative!
And that’s how I started off .. take some acrylic paint of your choice (or chalk paint, whichever you’ve got to hand) and paint over the wording. It took about three layers and I used a hairdryer in between layers to make sure the paint was dry before adding the next layer.
I took some card stock and traced the wooden hearts to get the right shape. Cut them out and Mod Podge straight onto the wooden hearts. Give another layer of Mod Podge over the top and leave to dry.
Putting the X in the XOXO
This bit was probably my favourite bit of making this XOXO Valentine sign – because it’s SO simple! I cut four pieces of ribbon and attached them to the sign by crisscrossing them .. And hot gluing them straight onto the sign – I only added hot glue on the cross section. How easy was that??!
I dug around for some buttons which I hot glued on top of each other on the crossing.
So once you’ve hot glued both hearts and both ribbon crosses to your sign, your XOXO Valentine sign should look something like this …
Now, isn’t that the simplest sign you’ve ever made?
I wanted to finish it off with a bow, but didn’t want to attach it to the actual sign, as it would take the focus off the design. So, I made a messy bow and tied it to the string.
Which worked a treat for hiding the nail when it came to hanging the sign too!
And here’s how it looks as you come into our hallway ..
It’s not a massive sign, but the colours are bold enough to add a little pop of colour 😉
You may be wondering about our wall paper?.. Yup!! It most certainly is glitter! 😉 .. our house is a little bit EXTRA like that 🙂 .. You can find our hallway makeover, including details on the glitter wallpaper in this post!
