Of course adding some autumn fun to your home doesn’t have to be all about pumpkins!! Now, granted I’m self confessed pumpkin fan 🙂 And I’m sure you’ve seen I got a bit carried away when we went pumpkin picking the other day. But, I’ve also been adding just some pops of autumn colour to our home in different parts of the house. And this picture frame was the perfect autumn addition to a tray I have in the kitchen. I wanted to add a bit of a colourful backdrop to our white owl with some simple craft supplies. Here’s how I made it!
By the way, did you know this owl had a makeover itself? I bought it on Facebook Market Place (one of my favourite places for bargain buys!) and it looked VERY different when I bought it. You can find the make-over here. Super-simple but I’m loving how it’s turned out!
what you need for your autumn frame
- A picture frame – I got mine from The Range for £3.99 – it’s similar to this one
- Some autumn leaves – I used some craft leaves from The Works for only a pound – bargain! Alternatively Amazon do these ones online
- Some conkers – they’re free you guys!!! The perfect excuse to go out on a lovely walk in the fresh air!
- Some lace ribbon – I used one similar to this one
- White acrylic paint
- Jute or Hessian material. I bought mine from Hobby Craft here.
- A few scrabble tiles- get them from The Range or the Works or Amazon do them online here
- Hot glue
Although I really liked the picture frame as I bought it (I mean, just look how gorgeous and rustic this one is?!), I wanted to add some autumn touches to it. I took off the little hearts at the top (and saved them for another project! – these will come in very handy for a Valentine’s Day project). As a true crafter, you never throw anything 😉
Next, I took measured off some crochet lace and added a strip of it to the top of the frame. Just to add a bit of contrast to the wood. When this is all set, grab some of the craft leaves and glue them over the top of the lace.

Because I created this on a Facebook session I didn’t take any photos, but I hope this speaks for itself. If not, you can catch the Facebook video here where I explain every step!
I do regular craft sessions on my Facebook page where I share ideas so while you’re there don’t forget to “like” my page to follow me along with loads of different projects. Here’s the video:
Next, I hot glued some conkers (Nature’s free craft material .. whoop whoop!!) on top of the leaves.
I cut out a maple leaf shape from a print out on the Internet here which I traced and added to a jute material which I got from Hobby Craft. I added some funky polka dots for fun. (For some reason I’m always drawn to polka dots!!). Just with some acrylic white paint and one of these dabber sponge brushes.
Finally, I found some left over scrabble tiles. These are so versatile and I’ve used them in various projects before – You can check out this post here how to make your own Scrabble Tile picture! Hot glue the letters to the bottom and you’re all set. A quick and easy picture frame that will take you half an hour to put together.
Here’s how it looks in our kitchen. I’m really pleased with it contrasts the white which is exactly what I was going for. And how CUTE are those salt and pepper shakers to match the owl? I bought them on Ebay and think they look ADORABLE on this autumn tray. You can check out similar ones here.
