Well thank goodness for toilet rolls in this corona lock down people! Right? Well clearly, for all sorts of reasons (if you catch my drift ..) but no more so when it comes to kids’ craft projects! With a little bit of imagination and basic crafting you can build yourself an entire zoo in no time at all 😉 Kids will love creating this fun, easy and colourful toilet roll butterfly!
You can download and print the template for the wings here. Either print it out on coloured paper all ready to cut. Or trace it onto coloured paper from the template. And of course, if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can design your own wings and create a whole fleet of coloured butterflies. That’ll keep them busy!
here’s what you need
- Butterfly wing template – print here (or of course you can draw your own)
- Toilet roll(s)
- Some paint (I used this pink)
- Paint brush – as you know I love using these sponge brushes
- Coloured card
- Some buttons – or cut out some colourful circles
- Some googly eyes – (or you can paint some on if you’ve not got any to hand)
- A colourful pipe cleaner
- Some mini pom poms (optional)
- Glue (I used a glue gun, but if kids are doing the gluing, I’d stick with the PVA stuff)
- Scissors
- A black Sharpie or black pen
and here’s how to do it
Start by painting the toilet roll in a bright, happy colour. I used this bright pink acrylic paint but of course you can choose any colour (or go wild and use multiple colours)
Next, print out the template here. You can either print it all ready onto coloured paper, or print it out on basic printer paper and then trace the template. Next cut out the wings for your toilet roll butterfly.
Glue down some colourful buttons on the wings. No buttons to spare? Don’t worry (I certainly don’t want to be responsible for people cutting them off their clothes!). Keep your dignity and cut out some circles from some different colour card and glue them down instead.
Next, take your pipe cleaner and fold it in half. Curl the ends round like in the picture.
Glue a mini pom pom on each side of the “curl” to make the antennae for your toilet roll butterfly.
Grab your brightly painted toilet roll and secure your pipe cleaner on the inside of the toilet roll with some glue. I used a hot glue gun for this project but if you’re going to let your kids do the gluing, I’d stick with the PVA glue. It will take a bit longer but it’ll keep those little kiddie fingers away from the glue gun 🙂
Now, to give your toilet roll butterfly some expressions, we’re going to glue the eyes on. If you’ve not got these to hand, you can just draw some faces on. Need ideas on how to draw facial expressions? Then check out this quick guide!
Let’s put it together!
Now you’re ready to put the whole thing together. Simply add some glue to the middle of the wings and stick the toilet roll into place.
All that’s needed now is to give your toilet roll butterfly a smile with a Sharpie or a black pen.
