You know, I’m a sucker for gingerbread men! (Well, actually I’m a sucker for anyone Christmas related, but that’s a whoooole other story!) So when my father in law gave me a wooden spoon with the words “can you do anything with this?” .. the answer was “heck yes!”. In fact, I went out and bought two more! To create a little spoon gingerbread family. Here’s how to change your budget wooden spoons to some cute gingerbread faces for your kitchen:
What you need for your gingerbread wooden spoon family
- A variety of wooden spoons. I used 3 of them, but you can go wild and use as many as you want
- acrylic paint – I used brown and white for the faces
- Posca pens for the eyes, nose and mouth (optional as you can use acrylic paint if you prefer)
- Paint brushes
- Some ribbon (optional but oh so cute to finish off your project) – I used this one
- Hot glue
Start by painting the top of the spoon brown. Of course you can paint the whole spoon if you want, but I’m only painting the top to the part where a cute little bow is going to sit. You an see on the photo I started off with a darker brown colour. But, I didn’t like it as it just didn’t look like a gingerbread colour. So I added some white and repainted them.
I ended up giving them a few layers of paint. Leave to dry in between coats. When they’re fully dried, give them a cute little face. You can find some expressions here if you need any inspiration. I wanted to give each one a separate expression. After all, each gingerbread man or woman has their own personality!!
I used these Posca paint pens to create their faces and finished off by just adding a cute little tie for the boy and a girly ribbon for the gingerbread woman.
How cute have they turned out?!
And that was it – told you it was easy! All in all, this cost me just over £2 (£1 for each of the spoons and one freebie that gave me the idea in the first place 🙂 ) – and of course the paint and ribbon, which I already had on hand.
I love how they just brighten up a little corner in our kitchen 🙂
Now how’s that for a super-simple fun Christmas project?
