As a true Christmas fanatic, we’ve got a few trees up around the house. And I love all of them, but the one in our lounge is my absolutely favourite. It’s a lovely full tree and it has room for LOADS of decorations. Of course it’s filled to the brim, but there’s always room for something else 🙂 Now, buying decorations is heaps of fun. Especially because there’s soooo much choice. But I love making my own too. So a combination of both worlds ticks all the boxes!
I got these cute little guys in The Range. And there’s nothing wrong with just hanging them in the tree individually. BUT, I wanted to create a big of a bigger item. Something that’s not so “off the shelf”. Here’s what I did.

Sorry, there’s no photos of me making it, BUT you can catch me make this on a Facebook Live by checking out the video here.
What you need for your nutcracker decorations
- A small picture frame – I used a 6 x6 inch (total size 7 x 7 inch) square frame from The Range. Alternatively, Amazon do a black frame here.
- Some decorations – I used a pack of 3 piece nutcracker decorations but you can use any you like that will fit in the frame
- Some card or scrapbook paper for the background – I used a Christmas Design pad from The Works (bargain for £3!)
- Hot glue
- Wooden beads – I used the half inch ones
- Some string

Here’s what I did
Well, the idea was to pop the glass out of the frame. BUT, that didn’t work .. errmm .. awkward!! Especially on a Live 😉 But we worked around it! I glued one of the scrapbook pieces of paper to the back of the frame and used that as the base.
Anyway, normally I would have popped the glass out of the frame. Trace the backing with the background paper and glue this back onto the backing. Pop the backing back into the frame (without the glass). This now becomes your background for the picture.
Next cut off the strings of your decorations. And just hot glue your chosen decorations straight onto the background. That’s pretty much it if you want to have this displayed on a sideboard somewhere.
However, I wanted to have it hanging in the tree. So if you want to have your frame as a hanging display, grab some string and put on some wooden beads. Little tip for you – wrap a small bit of cello tape around the end of the string – it makes it sooo much easier to string those beads! Check out my post on how to make your own wooden garland where I show this in a bit more detail!

You can make the string as short or as long as you want, but enough to have some room to hang it on a branch. Once you’re happy with the length, tie a knot either end to prevent the beads from falling off. Leave enough string to hot glue this onto the back of the picture frame. And that’s it!

I think they’ve turned out great – and perfect if you’re looking for a bit of a bigger decoration.

Sorry, one last photo. Just because I liked this one 😉
