I’m sure there’s a million different ways to do this project! But with all the scrap wood we’ve got in the workshop this way was the obvious choice for me. I’m talking about making a decorative book stack. I’m sure you’ve seen them on Pinterest. Or maybe in a shop when they “stage” a dresser or coffee table? They just look so cute and stylish. Turns out it’s so easy to make your own!
No scrap wood to hand? Not to worry! – you can paint some old hardcover books. Wanna see why and how I painted my books when we redid our bookcase? You can check out this blog post here.
You can paint them, cover them with some neutral brown or white paper. Or even use fabric. The possibilities are endless!
Anyway, back to this project ..
Here’s what you need:
Three pieces of scrap wood, cut to the same size – mine are about 20.5 x 14 cm
Paint
Sandpaper (about 120 grit)
Stamp set (or you can write your own words with a Sharpie)
Ribbon
Hot glue gun – love this bright coloured one!
how to create your own book stack
I made these on a Facebook Live, which you can catch here if you want to craft along!
Here’s a quick recap! Get three pieces of wood and cut to the same size. I cut mine to 20.5 x 14 cm approx.
Give them a light sand to get rid of any chips and smooth off the sharp edges.

Get some paint and give them a cover of your colour of choice. I went neutral but of course, the choice is yours!
As you’re going to be gluing them on top of each other I only painted one side and the edges. Leave to dry.
Once dried I slightly sanded the edges to give a bit of worn look.
Hot glue the three pieces of top of each other so they resembled a stack of books. I took my mini alphabet stamp set and stamped some wording on the side of the stack.
result!
I went for a Valentine theme BUT of course you can do any style that’s right for you! That’s the beauty of this project – you can totally adjust it to any style and theme you want to decorate for.

Hot glue some ribbon around the stack on the opposite side.

What do you think? Simple but so cute and effective
I have had so many questions about the heart cookie cutters. I got mine in Waitrose, but Amazon do similar ones here. Just tie them together with some cute ribbon!
