If you know anything about me, you know I love myself a cup of coffee! And if you’ve had a look around the blog, you already know I love adding some seasonal touches to my little coffee corner in our kitchen. Now, I’ve not got it quite set up for Valentine yet, but I knew I wanted to create a quick and fun “Love is brewing” sign to add to my corner. Here’s how it turned out! I think you’ll like it!
spread the love
My starting point was this wooden heart shape from Hobby Craft. I removed the string and the tag and gave it a generous coating of Mod Podge.
I mean, not a crazy amount, but enough to fully cover the whole area. Something like this:
Next, I dried it. I used a hair dryer to speed up the process but you can leave it to air dry if you prefer. Just make sure it’s completely dry to the touch before you go on to the next step.
adding some color!
Take a serviette of your choice. I used this colourful heart patterned design from The Range.
You are only going to need the very top patterned layer for this project. I find that wetting your fingers slightly helps to peel away the top.
I used this little travel iron for this next step, but bear with me – there is another way of doing this if you don’t have one. Keep reading – I’ll cover it lower down this post!
Oh, and grab yourself some non stick baking paper.
Place the serviette layer on top of the heart and place your baking paper on top of that.
Next, take your hot iron and go over your entire design. The heat will reactive the Mod Podge and make sure it’s sticking to the heart serviette.
Once you are happy that it’s all stuck down, take a sanding block and hit the edges of the heart to get rid of any excess paper.
Cover with a layer of Mod Podge and you’re well on your way to finishing this project! P.S. – I know it doesn’t look the prettiest at this stage but don’t worry – it dries clear!
there is another way!
As I said, if you don’t have a mini iron, don’t worry, here’s another way to do this project!
I’m using the other side of the heart to show you the alternative way. Add the Mod Podge as before, but this time leave it wet.
Take your top layer of serviette and carefully place it on the heart. Because the Mod Podge is wet, it will stick straight away so take your time in doing this. Once it’s stuck .. it’s stuck!! Take some cling film and place it over the top.
The cling film will act as a barrier – take a credit card or use your fingers to gently push out any creases or air bubbles until you’ve covered the whole area.
The next step is the same as before – use a sanding block to get rid of any excess paper, give it another layer of Mod Podge to seal it and leave to dry.
Adding the blackboard
While that’s drying we’re going to be working on this little chalkboard. I bought this small heart shaped black board from The Works a while ago. I think I paid £1 but if they no longer do them, check out these ones from The Range. I took off the easel bit of the heart which took a bit of persuading but I managed it without breaking the heart.
I used my Silhouette Cameo to make the “Love is brewing” decal. If you don’t have a Silhouette, you can use some chalk to write your own message. Or get creative with some craft scrabble tiles to write a smaller message.
Once you are happy with your message, take some hot glue and stick the chalkboard to your larger heart.
How easy was that? Perfect if you’re decorating a small area to add to a stand. I used these small decorative holders from Amazon (they’re the 4 inc size) which are perfect to hold this up.
Stay tuned for the rest of my little coffee area soon! In the mean time, here’s a post from a few years ago!
And if you liked this project, would you do me a HUGE favour and pin this to Pinterest for me so others can find it too?
